This position is for an intermediate level research engineer. The Research Engineer will apply expertise and knowledge to technical projects, finding innovative, cost-effective means to process and/or dispose of municipal solid waste (MSW) and other residues. Responsibilities will include investigating, and evaluating standard and novel approaches to handling MSW and other wastes within developing countries, lacking financial resources for waste handling infrastructure. The scope of responsibilities shall include: thermal processing to produce synthesis gases suitable for utilization within an internal combustion engine directly coupled to an electrical power generator, as well as standard steam cycle processes. The candidate will have a fundamental understanding of combustion, and gasification, and the use of the resulting gases in boilers and internal combustion engines proven capable of utilizing low calorific synthesis gases to generate electricity and heat. The candidate will assist in the detailed design, construction and monitoring of the operation of waste to energy projects.
The candidate should have a clear understanding of the functionality, performance criterion, and applicability of the various energy technologies and particularly internal combustion gas engine technologies as provided by different gas engine manufacturers. Knowledge and proficiency in database creation and management and data mining are required skills. The Research Engineer must have a basic understanding of waste thermal process technologies, especially gasification, with a solid background in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mass transfer, and heat transfer. Advanced and graduate level courses in the later subjects is preferred for this position.
The candidate will also provide insights into integrated solid waste management systems by assisting in the development of plans for solid waste collection, transportation/transfer, and unutilized waste disposal. Therefore, the research engineer candidate should hold a certification or alike work experience in integrated solid waste management.
In addition to the technical skills required, the research engineer will be in constant communication with customers within sub-Saharan Africa, and therefore, a broad understanding of African culture and written/oral fluency in French are beneficial.
Assist senior process engineers with process computer modeling and process planning, detailed design, and construction coordination of waste to energy projects.
Conduct research into gasification processes for production of synthesis gases from MSW and other wastes.
Conduct research into internal combustion engines and electric power generation from low calorific value synthesis gases, as well as standard steam cycle power generation.
Conduct evaluations for the feasibility, operation and performance of solid waste handling and processing equipment, components and systems.
Assist in planning of integrated solid waste management systems.
Establish and coordinate the maintenance and safety procedures, service schedules, and supply of materials required to maintain machines and process equipment.
Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
Apply engineering principles and practices to emerging fields of waste management technology.
Assist in preparation of application cost estimates with continual analysis of design variables.
Coordinate and communicate work effort within organization.
Initiate approaches and low-cost innovations to maintain technical leadership.
Assist in publication of papers and applications for patents, where necessary.
At least three years of experience in research and development, or a Master’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering plus one-year of experience in research and development (academic or professional).
Have an understanding through study or experience with thermal processing of solid waste.
Have a solid understanding of combustion and gasification systems, steam generation and internal combustion gas engines capable of utilizing low calorific value synthesis gases.
Certification or alike experience in the management of integrated solid waste management systems.
Proficiency with writing FORTRAN executable pseudo-codes.
Excellent communication and writing skills.
Domestic and International travel with extended stays as needed.
Experience with Microsoft Excel macros.
Working experience with Microsoft Power Point and Word.
Communicate and write fluently in French.
Experience and understanding of sub-Saharan African cultures and communities is a plus.
