The City of Lompoc is currently recruiting for a Landfill Supervisor in our Solid waste Division. This person will report to the Solid waste Superintendent and is the first level supervisor for all Landfill staff. Under direction, the class of Landfill Supervisor is a first level supervisory position responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work of assigned staff employed in disposal operations, waste handling and processing at a sanitary landfill. The incumbent in this class is responsible for complying with appropriate County and State permits as well as regulatory requirements relative to a sanitary landfill. Work may be performed under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, dirt, foul odors and other conditions characteristic of a landfill area. The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Schedule personnel for heavy equipment operations, general maintenance and construction work at the sanitary landfill; follows the guidelines formulated in the landfill master plan; gathers data concerning landfill usage; makes or recommends decisions regarding hiring, promotion, terminations, discipline or other change in status; directs site maintenance and improvement programs; inspects work of subordinates; performs employee evaluations; determines equipment and material requirement for disposal operations, site maintenance and improvement projects; develops site and equipment schedules; prepares daily supervisor operation reports, accident and related reports; prepares and maintains various other records and reports; receives, resolves and/or refers employee and public complaints and inquiries; Inspects disposal site to assure proper operation; may be required to cut and move cover soil, clears land for expanding landfill site; identifies and reports need for major mechanical repairs; assists in developing, coordinating and presenting safety programs; trains subordinate employees; orders necessary materials and supplies; may operate and maintain various types of light and heavy equipment; and performs other work as required.

Include any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is: EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of responsible experience in public works or other construction and maintenance activities including the operation of heavy equipment with at least two (2) years experience in the disposal of refuse and operation of landfills. Supervisory or lead experience is preferred. LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid Class B California Drivers' License. KNOWLEDGE OF: Applicable codes and regulations pertaining to the operations and maintenance of the sanitary landfill; operation and routine maintenance of diesel and gas-powered heavy construction equipment and other equipment used in solid waste disposal operations; General maintenance in construction materials and practices; general operations of a sanitary landfill; recordkeeping; principles of supervision and training; and appropriate safety precautions and procedures. ABILITY TO: Read and follow the regulatory requirements and guidelines formulated in the landfill master plan; maintain the landfill in conformance with appropriate County and State permits; supervise, schedule, prioritize and organize the work of a sanitary landfill crew; Skillfully operate bulldozers and other heavy equipment including the pioneering of slopes; read and follow surveyor grade stakes; maintain records; read and write at a level required for successful job performance; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and operate personal computer. |
