The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts university grounds and facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).
A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, custodial services, energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, event services, residential facilities coordination and grounds maintenance.
Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental safety and security, campus planning, and design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation, and new construction.
Tufts University Facilities Services department is seeking a responsible and proactive Manager for Grounds Operations who will report to the Director Facilities for Campus Services. The position is responsible for 150 acres including lawns, parking lots, walks and drives, planting beds, natural and synthetic athletic fields, wide variety of trees and large amounts of shrubs and perennial beds. The position will work closely with the grounds staff, the manager for labor and waste/recycling operations, trades zone managers and the campus community. The grounds manager's position will be responsible for planning, scheduling, implementing, and reporting on the maintenance programs for the Medford campus while maintaining safety as a priority for the employees and the campus community. Key accountabilities include supervising a staff of +/- 16 employees supported by seasonal contract services. Applicants should have a wide variety of experience with cost estimating, extensive scheduling and managing basic grounds services and small projects. Extensive experience working with subcontractors and for inspecting and evaluating in-progress and completed work. This is an on-site campus management position.
Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of Assoc Degree in soil sciences, horticulture, turf management, landscape management, landscape architecture, or directly related degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience; or a High School diploma with a minimum of 7 years grounds management related experience including grounds maintenance and services, athletics fields, and winter operations.
Valid driver's license.
Must possess and maintain in good standing a State of Massachusetts Applicator's (Core) certificate within six (6) months of employment.
A minimum of a State of Massachusetts 2B hoisting license within one (1) year of employment.
A minimum of three (3) years of management experience for commercial or municipal grounds services and maintenance.
A minimum of three (3) years of direct supervision of ground's leads and staff for a minimum of five (5) employees.
A minimum of three (3) years of a proven record of excellent communication and interpersonal and team building skills within an organization of ground's leads and staff for a minimum of five (5) employees.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience for creating and managing service contracts for grounds and irrigation services and related equipment.
Ability to respond for after-hours and recall situations as needed for grounds emergencies, inclement weather and for winter operations.
Proven customer-oriented goals and objectives to meet the demands for a diverse and engaged campus community.
Proven skills to successfully manage a fast paced and diverse urban campus environment.
Demonstrated experience and proficiency with supervision as it relates to team building and collaboration, problem solving and customer diplomacy.
Demonstrated experience and proficiency with business related and CMMS software, i.e., work order and payroll systems.
Ability to meet and maintain all local, state, and federal licenses and certifications as required to conduct the responsibilities of the position and campus operations
Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture, arboriculture, turf management, sports field management or a related degree
A minimum of three (3) years of managing grounds services for a minimum of 10 acres in an urban setting.
Grounds zone management experience.
Establishing service levels and service level agreements.
Experience successfully managing in a union environment.
Experience managing campus grounds services including athletic fields for an institution for higher education.
Massachusetts Pesticide Commercial certification.
Experience with weather emergency response and best practices.
Experience with asphalt and concrete repairs for sewers and storm water management and with roads, lots, and sidewalks.
Experience with solid waste management and recycling/food waste operations and Green(r) practices.
Operating knowledge of irrigation systems and storm water systems.
Working knowledge and experience with synthetic tracks and field turf playing fields.
Green(r)/Sustainable design, landscape practices and irrigation conservation.
Low impact design and Green(r) infrastructure as it pertains to storm water management.
Experience working on LEED(r) projects.
