Zero Waste Manager has responsibility for the strategy, management and ongoing optimization of Georgetown University's waste management operations and Zero Waste initiatives; and leads efforts to achieve Georgetown's ambitious long-term vision of achieving Zero Waste (defined by industry standards as at least 90% diversion rate for solid waste).
Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Tenant Services, the
Zero Waste Manager interacts with faculty, staff, unionized employees, students, senior leadership, neighbors, external partners, vendors, government agencies and the general public; and collaborates with colleagues and partners as needed to accomplish goals, including but not limited to custodial services, residence life, neighborhood life, dining, graduation, sustainability, environmental safety, design and construction, and information services. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs supervisory and management work in organizing and directing the University's recycling, compost, waste-minimization and solid waste disposal programs.
- Develops and implements organization, staffing, equipment, schedules, policies, and procedures for the safe handling, collection, drop-off, pick-up, delivery and/or removal of materials.
- Ensures recycling and solid waste disposal is conducted in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Prepares and submits budget for operation and maintenance needs of the program and equipment.
- Develops and implements communication program to educate and engage the University community on recycling and waste reduction requirements, procedures, objectives and goals.
- Serves as the University's technical resource regarding minimization, recycling/composting, and waste disposal matters.
- Ensures that collection, drop-off, pick-up and other recycling and waste disposal sites are kept clean.
- Administers contracted services required by the program.
- Hires, trains and supervises permanent, temporary and student employees.
- Coordinates sales and optimizes revenue for recyclable materials.
- Establishes and maintains services and programs that reduce waste and increase diversion. Tracks, evaluates and continually optimizes program performance.
- Coordinates operations with other internal and external parties as necessary to achieve goals and objectives.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree
- 5 to 7 years of professional or managerial experience - with 3 years of experience directly related to recycling and solid waste management
- Computer literacy
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated experience interacting successfully with diverse stakeholders and a client-responsive approach
- Vendor management, budget planning and team management experience
- Highly motivated, able to work independently, and concerned with recycling and environmental issues
Preferred qualifications- Leadership and organizational skills
- A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement
- Experience working in a higher education context
- A LEED Green Associate, Sustainable Facility Manager or other relevant sustainability credential
