General Purpose of PositionThis position is responsible for working collaboratively within the University to lead and improve solid waste management and waste reduction (e.g., recycling, composting) efforts and reports to the Director of Environmental Services.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis position will be responsible for oversight of the universitys solid waste, recycling and waste reduction (e.g., recycling, composting) programs and for developing strategies to advance waste reduction and diversion efforts in support of the objectives in the Waste Reduction Master Plan. The position will work with Environmental Services leadership, the Office of Sustainability, Auxiliary Services, Elon Dining, Residence Life, Athletics, vendors and other constituencies to establish annual goals for waste reduction efforts and submit an annual report. Develop and implement methods to measure and track the success of waste reduction efforts at the building and departmental level and provide feedback to customers to improve waste reduction efforts.The position will oversee the sanitation unit in the removal and transportation of solid waste, including landfill, recycling and post-consumer composting materials, from campus as well as coordinate closely with Custodial managers and staff to maximize recycling and post-consumer composting and improve self-sorting and handling processes.The successful candidate will have experience developing and implementing waste reduction educational campaigns for all audiences, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors; promoting and supporting participation in waste reduction programs by University departments, faculty, students, and staff; and, collaborating with key constituents to enhance waste reduction efforts among students, faculty, and staff.Ability to work successfully in a large, complex organization, values diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to build collaborative relationships and business partnerships working passionately with people from diverse backgrounds, including students, faculty, and staff; can balance competing priorities and demands, implement innovative solutions to complex problems, meet deadlines with an attention to detail; has experience with creating educational programs based on social science and behavioral change management principles; and, seeks to represent and promote the University on a regional, state, and national level in the sustainability and waste management communities.Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Oversee daily waste reduction, recycling and composting operations Develop, monitor and report on annual waste reduction goals to facilitate achievement of long-term waste reduction goals Recommend, implement and administer methods and procedures to meet goals and objectives Monitor and report amounts and types of waste recycled, composted and landfilled on a monthly and annual basis In collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, develop and implement education and outreach programs related to waste reduction, recycling and composting Ensure effective and consistent bin placement and signage Coordinate and manage the move-in and move-out waste reduction programs Coordinate and manage waste reduction (e.g., recycling, composting) efforts at special events and athletic events Schedule trucks, equipment or materials necessary to complete work Provide training to sanitation drivers and custodial staff regarding waste reduction efforts Serve as a resource regarding waste reduction for students, faculty and staff Monitor waste collection sites and ensure cleanliness and serviceability of site areas Manage and effectively monitor budget and all expenditures Assist Director of Environmental Services with waste hauler contract negotiations Speak publicly about waste reduction, recycling and composting efforts on and off campus Research and maintain working knowledge of best practices regarding waste reduction and participate in continued professional development and related professional organizations
Education and ExperienceBachelors degree required. Minimum of five years related supervisory experience and or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
