Job Overview
The Heavy Vehicle Operator is responsible for driving refuse and recycling vehicles, picking up solid waste materials from designated collection points, examining waste for contaminants and hazardous waste, and transporting to landfills. Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintains daily collection records
Assists in route scheduling and determination of pick up points
Operates compactor units
Arranges for truck and container repair and maintenance
Lifts and empties heavy recycling and solid waste containers, processes materials, and cleans and disinfects recycling and solid waste vehicles, collection areas, and collection containers
Assures all recycling and solid waste areas are clean, fully functional, and operational
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Recycling Project Manager along with two recycling laborers, the Heavy Vehicle Operator reports indirectly to the Superintendent of Landscape and Waste Management along with the Landscape Supervisor, a Garage Supervisor and the Sport Turf Supervisor.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalency
2 years of years of commercial or heavy vehicle driving experience
Valid CDL issued by the District of Columbia
Good knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
Ability to operate heavy equipment, to include driving the vehicle, operating and programming the interior compactors, operating the lift gate, the steam cleaner, and the air brakes
Ability to learn categories of recyclable materials and awareness of hazardous waste
Work Mode: On Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.
