As the Coordinator of Education & Outreach, you will lead compliance strategies, policies, and programs to raise awareness and bring about behaviour change for more sustainable waste and water management practices within the corporation as well as in the broader community. You will provide specialized professional advice to the department and communications in the areas of social based marketing, best practices in leading behaviour changes to support environmental policy and goals. This work is high profile and a politically sensitive area of work. This position reports to the Manager, Program Development & Delivery. You will be responsible for leading the public education and outreach team in designing, developing, implementing and on-going delivery of public education and outreach activities to increase use of more sustainable waste and water management practices to achieve the corporations waste reduction, diversion, and water management goals. This includes working with schools, government, industry, community groups, media, and the public as well as other City departments to inform, advocate and promote water and waste reduction to achieve sustainability goals, requiring the incumbent to build and maintain effective relationships. You will be expected to exercise independent judgement, initiative, and decision-making authority to develop proactive programs and respond to public concerns.
What you offer:
You hold considerable knowledge of solid waste and water environmental initiatives and can hone your interpersonal and project management skills to effectively develop and facilitate processes and discussions for problem solving and program delivery. You will feel extremely confident and comfortable conducting presentations, participating and leading discussions in a contentious environment, and communicating ideas and concepts effectively to a variety of audiences including formal public presentations, written reports, and one-on-one dialogue. You describe yourself as having excellent oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on public speaking and report writing, along with a strong ability to demonstrate leadership with a professional approach, including being results-oriented and displaying initiative, integrity, and enthusiasm. A University degree in Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Public Relations, or Communications with courses in Business Administration, Communications, Adult Education, or other related areas would typically set you up for success in this role. You will have three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in a related field developing and delivering public education and outreach programs and coordinating and managing projects, and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity. Municipal experience is an asset, but not a requirement. You will possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and have a vehicle available for work use, (a kilometer reimbursement is provided).
