Under general direction, Supervising Waste Management Specialist supervises a major unit within a section of a division or department. Incumbents are responsible for planning, directing and evaluating the work of professional and technical staff in a unit within a section. They perform a wide variety of highly technical assignments requiring specialized and scientific competence in areas of solid and/or liquid non-hazardous and/or hazardous waste and hazardous materials management which may include program development, planning, resource recovery, education, commercial waste control, environmental, reduction, diversion, and safety programs. They also perform the more complex and difficult evaluations, investigations or studies involving emerging non-hazardous waste and hazardous waste control laws, regulations and technologies. Positions at this level may be assigned responsibility for program, policy, and legislation development and implementation in major program areas such as household hazardous waste receiving facilities and monitoring programs, requiring technical expertise above the advanced journey level.
Minimum Qualifications: Either: 1. One year of full-time experience in the class of Associate Waste Management Specialist in Sacramento County service.
Or: 2. A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in engineering, planning, chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a closely related field.
AND
Three years of full-time experience in liquid and/or solid non-hazardous or hazardous waste; non-hazardous or hazardous materials programs and/or waste facilities.
Note: Full-time experience in one of the areas outlined above may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
