The Greensville County Landfill Supervisor performs senior level, skilled and technical work supervising the operation of the County landfill; and does related work as required. The work is performed under regular supervision of the Assistant County Administrator. Supervision is exercised over the Landfill Operators and Scale Operator.
The individual supervises landfill operations, operates equipment, maintains records and files; and prepare reports. Supervises the dumping of solid waste; and enforce local, state safety, and waste material standards at the landfill.
Education: Graduation from college with a bachelors or associates degree preferred and three (3) years of experience in landfill operations.
Special Licenses/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of Class II Landfill Operator’s license and must be 21 years of age.

JOB SUMMARY
Performs senior level, skilled, and technical work supervising the operation of the County landfill; and does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant County Administrator. Supervision is exercised over the Landfill Operators and Scale Operator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervises landfill operations; operates equipment; maintains records and files; and prepares reports;
Supervises the dumping of solid waste; and enforces local, state safety, and waste material standards at the landfill;
Ensures landfill complies with applicable laws, rules, and regulations;
Implements policy changes;
Opens and closes landfill; and directs users to proper disposal areas;
Supervises landfill improvements;
Ensures landfill is developed according to approved plans;
Services and maintains related equipment;
Monitors the handling of tires, rock and rubble, wood products, and recyclables.
Maintains records and prepares reports on landfill activities;
Maintains record of continuing education hours on employees to ensure Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements are met;
Acts as Safety Compliance Officer over landfill staff and is responsible for implementing federal, state, and local safety standards applicable to the operation of the landfill;
Enforces safety procedures and practices including monthly meetings;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Graduation from college with a bachelors or associates degree preferred and three (3) years of work experience in landfill operations.

Thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations governing landfill operations.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
Ability to maintain records and prepare related reports.
DEMANDS
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception; color perception; peripheral vision; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts; operation of machines; operation of motor vehicles or equipment; determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
