UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Building Services Department (BSD) delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus including clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the campus-wide comprehensive recycling & solid waste management program.
We have an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Custodial Services to serve as a senior operational leader with daily oversight of Custodial Services. Under general guidance from the Director, this position develops, recommends, and implements programs and services to ensure a clean and sanitary environment, and the reliable, safe and effective delivery of cleaning and services for University buildings. The position is responsible for personnel and resource management (approximately 145 FTEs, including 4 managers and budgets exceeding $10,000,000) across 4 geographical work areas on the UW Seattle Campus, and leads strategy, policy development and execution as a member of the senior leadership team in Building Services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
•Directly oversee Work Area activities, including planning, resource deployment, and personnel management for optimum unit performance in all custodial services of the University’s buildings. •Work with work area managers to pursue daily, routine and long-term projects to insure a healthful and quality indoor environment for all campus facilities while also meeting any regulatory standards. •Develop and monitor budgets for the unit and engage in determining budget priorities, systems solutions and performance standards to ensure financial and operational stability and effectiveness. •Perform human resource functions including interviewing, selection, training, performance evaluation, salary determination, promotion and corrective action. •Lead strategy development, planning and implementation as a member of the Building Services senior management team; support strategic initiatives identified by the Director. •Provide expertise in technical and long-range planning and lead strategic initiatives identified by the Director or by the department’s leadership team. •Identify institutional policies and/or practices that affect Custodial operations and ensure productive resolution of problems. •Develop and update various departmental policies and procedures, including the BSD’s Rules and Procedures Manual, Cleaning for Health Program, Green Cleaning Program, Emergency Response, and Safety Programs, etc. •Devise and conduct customer relations and outreach activities for Custodial Services while pursuing with customers effective services and cleaning schedules that support campus activities and building usage. •Provide a clear vision of what it means to deliver value to the customer and create an environment in which customer service is highly valued. •Provide expertise and leadership for the Lean and Ergonomics efforts in all Custodial Services units, and implement strategies to increase the involvement of all custodial staff in Lean & Ergonomic initiatives. •Provide an environment which fosters engagement of staff members in improving the work, solving problems, and increasing effectiveness. •Prepare reports and official documents in support of organization objectives and priorities, ensuring inclusion of perspectives of internal and external constituencies and other affected parties. •Develop and oversee the on-going status of the departmental quality assurance program. •Analyze and identify trends and implement appropriate measures to insure APPA level standards and goals are achieved. •Stay abreast of developments in the custodial field that enables delivery of world class services; continuously coordinate product and equipment tests, working closely with manufacturers and staying current on advances within the cleaning industry. •Train and develop managerial, supervisory, and leadership staff. •Provide opportunities for learning and growth and ensure that the Department’s orientation and training program is effective. •Develop agenda and participate in Labor Relations activities including joint union labor management meetings. •Define, demonstrate and maintain a rigorous standard of safety and routinely communicate the department’s commitment to safety. •Attend industry functions; present materials and projects. •Represent the Director as needed with internal, external or organization constituencies. •Participate on and serve as staff as may be required on University Committees and UW Facility initiatives and in issue resolution. •Other duties as required

Requirements include:
•Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible management experience including personnel supervision, fiscal management, computer applications, and training experience in human relations and sensitivity to multi-ethnic groups. •Experience in operations management and supervision within a service-focused workforce, and customer service program development. •Experience in management and supervision in a unionized environment. •High degree of professionalism, integrity and ownership needed; must be customer-committed and results-oriented. •Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication and presentation skills; ability to work successfully with people at all levels throughout the organization and with a wide range of constituencies. •Demonstrated leadership abilities and effective management skills, including an ability to work effectively in a large and complex organization are essential. •Proven record of accomplishment in exercising discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision-making processes. •Public speaking and training expertise. •Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies. •Ability to efficiently and effectively travel locally to alternate work sites as needed
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
•IEHA certification. •Experience in public sector or higher education. •Management experience specific to educational and institutional facilities services. •Experience leading process improvement activities, and using techniques and methods, such as LEAN; demonstrated effectiveness managing in a culture of change and transition. •Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.
Conditions of Employment:
•Recurring peaks in workload and deadlines often require working beyond 40 hours per week. •Occasional meetings or activities mandate working outside the normal administrative hours of the University. •Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. •Regular and predictable attendance is required
