Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Recycling Technician supports the Recycling Services section and its efforts to reduce volumes of solid waste through diversion of materials from the solid waste stream.
Responsibilities include:
Collect recyclable materials from designated areas throughout the campus according to established procedures and the North Carolina Waste Management Act.
Weigh and record materials arriving or departing the facilities.
Sort and separate materials to include paper, plastic, metal, glass, and wood.
Separate, inspect, count, and containerize recyclables.
Operate a variety of recycling equipment and vehicles, such as baling machines.
Load and weigh containers for processing & transportation.
Operate scales to properly weigh recyclables and baled materials.
Instruct patrons in proper recycling techniques and facility rules/guidelines.
Ensure the cleanliness of the recycling facility.
Communicates with university employees, departments, outside agencies, and the public regarding recycling program compliance.
Maintain Recycling Center in a clean, well-organized manner, avoiding clutter and potential fire hazards.
Answer questions and promote the recycling program to students, faculty, and staff; instructs students, faculty, and staff on appropriate materials to place in containers.
Operate and perform basic maintenance of recycling equipment as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Physical stamina to work long periods in an outside environment
Ability to communicate well in verbal and written form
Ability to lift a minimum of 100 pounds
Ability to work alone as well as with other people
Reading and math skills
Ability to learn new procedures, concepts, and techniques
A high degree of motivation and enthusiasm for the success of the recycling program
Required Certifications or Licensures:
Valid NC driver's license.
